Why do we seek romance? Is it programming? Do you see less seeking as more people awaken? How do you see the future of romantic relationships?

Questions from brooke

I believe that many people are in the process of transitioning from a biologically driven "motivation to mate" to a spiritually driven desire for deeper awareness through conscious love.  That which can be used by the ego (looking for a mate due to codependence or wanting to use sex to avoid our feelings) can be used by the spirit (opening to love so that we can heal more deeply, expand our heart, have someone to share with about all of the little things we're figuring out about ourselves and life!).

As more people awaken, the manner in which they seek will change.  When people meet others in person, physical attraction will not be enough to motivate flirting (actual dialogue and sharing will be necessary first, and intuition will help detect another's "energy" beyond their physical form).  Dating site profiles will be less about "where you've travelled/what activities you enjoy" and more about personal and spiritual values.  People will see through the facades of others more clearly, and less "taken in" by superficial components.  As they learn to trust their inner guidance, they will care less about socialized values and more about finding qualities that resonate on a deeper level.

Romance, in my opinion, is far from an endangered species.  It's simply changing from the desire to breed with a symmetrical mate to opening to a love that is capable of fullness, presence, compassion, understanding, and other deeper values.

There are some on the spiritual path who feel completely whole and not drawn to a romantic/sexual partnership.  For the other 99.99%+ of us, we will continue desire the lessons and growth that conscious sexual unions can help us experience.  I was surprised to find that Eckhart Tolle, who I believe is truly enlightened, is in a romantic/sexual relationship (with Kim Eng).  I had wondered when I first started studying his work if once you attain enlightenment there is any drive to "improve upon what is already perfect."  Apparently, love and sex still feel good even when your mind is not encumbered with incessant thinking.  In fact, it could be said that until we disentangle ourselves from all of our muddled ruminations and addictions we will never know what love really is.  However, we don't have to be celibate until reaching a place of clarity because our various attractions will certainly lead us to the lessons we need for our growth.

The universe is a clever and intricate system that utilizes our more "base" desires for our required life lessons.  So if we want more money, fame, love, sex, or power...we can be assured that what happens during our pursuit of these goals will ultimately teach us about who we truly are, and what we actually came here to do.

Peace,
Chris
