Question from brooke
I believe there is a phase during which protection is important. While we are still developing spiritual depth, our sensitivity can be seen as a burden because we "feel everything" and much of what we feel is abrasive. Our ego may also trouble us by sending self-defeating messages such as, "You're weird. You don't fit in. You're different than other people who can have a good time in loud, crowded, intense situations!"
Removing ourselves from abrasive stimuli and protecting ourselves from negativity serves the purpose of helping us to connect with inner stillness. It's like our awakening refines our radar so we can start paying attention to the important subtle energies...but this enhanced ability also makes overt things "too overt" so we have to modify our life if we want to feel more comfortable during this transition.
Our ego says, "This sucks...and my life will always suck because of it." However, I believe that because our sensitivity leads to greater self-awareness and consciousness (if we are committed to our growth) then eventually we become so high vibrational that external "things" no longer "bump into is" and hurt. Instead, they go through us...and we are not affected.
For example, if we are in an ego state of raw agitation, someone can say the "wrong" thing, or an abrasive noise occurs, or the sun is glaring in our eyes...and it's all really annoying! We feel agitated because our senses (and our mind's interpretation of events) is fighting against what is.
But when we are in an enlightened state, the words people say, the occurrences in our environment, and so on, simply are. We are no longer fighting against what is. We no longer mind what happens. And in this state of surrender, sensitivity is no longer problematic.
So, in a nutshell, sensitivity pushes us into deeper spiritual growth (because that is what we are here to do), and for awhile we are best served by modifying our environment so it's not as overwhelming, but eventually we reach peace and no longer see it as a burden. When you reach this state, you will probably still prefer to live in peaceful environments, but it won't feel so critical because external stimuli will pass through you.
Peace,
Chris
