Friendship 2.0
She had written her friend 6 days ago.
And by now, everything she'd shared had changed.
Everything she had been so excited to talk about
(and by talk, she of course meant type)
was no longer relevant.
The only way to receive a timely reply from her friend
was to write no more than a sentence, maybe two.
And even when a response arrived,
there was only a 50% chance that her friend
would acknowledge any given question she had asked.
She tried to consider this normal,
the way things must be in a busy world
where we now have hundreds of friends.
During these last 6 days she scanned her friend's status updates,
reminders of everything her friend was choosing to do
other than respond.
The safe, benign, lowest common denominator-targeted postings
were kind of like human contact. Somewhat, anyhow.
It is sharing, after all.
And yet it was clear that the more aloof the post,
the more comments it would receive.
So during one restless night it became clear...
Her deepest longing was for true, reliable contact,
and reciprocal communication is all that satiates
the spirit's desire for connection and understanding.
Beneath this new moon it was time to rearrange everything,
stop reaching out for emptiness,
and ignore the hollow postings of the inconsistent and unavailable.
One reliable friend, she knew, was worth more to her
than a thousand thin strands of potential in a broken web.
