Feeling Good Without External Gratification

I feel as though I've discovered a treasure within the exploration of my mind. It's the idea that at some point we pretty much all became overly fixated upon external gratification leading to feeling good. And so we all started running around, chasing after our various goals: sex, money, power, fame, adventure. All of these highs have something in common...they're about things/people outside of ourselves leading to feeling good.

This addiction to the external highs has left us wired in a way that we don't tend to realize how simple it is to feel good (once we're re-wired in a centered manner). In other words, I'm returning to the simplicity of feeling good simply because I can feel good, and letting go of my external addictions.

When I consider going deeper into this world of inner peace my ego says, "No! Don't do it! Think of all the good things you'll miss out on!" But I know that it's not about denying experiences of the world. It's about no longer depending upon them.

Eckhart Tolle is one of the most enlightened people I've ever witnessed (I've seen him in video form and believe he is truly at peace). He wasn't born with some special brain chemistry or neural wiring. He suffered greatly until he popped open and let go of his identification with his mind. Anyone can do it. It's such a powerful idea (the idea that any of us can become enlightened) that the ego rebels and looks for any addictive tendency that can keep one trapped in suffering.

When we become addicted to external events, we set ourselves up to be miserable until we get our next fix. We're always struggling and waiting, struggling and waiting, because we feel that with enough effort and patience we will get to that place of happiness. And it will look like the portrait we've painted in our mind that was so heavily influenced by our socialization. But we can release ourselves from the self-imposed prison of waiting for external things to occur. We can turn in this moment to a sense of okay-ness with ourselves, with what is.

If we are willing to release ourselves from the burden of attachment to other people behaving in ways we prefer them to behave, or events unfolding in a way that we consider to be "perfect", then we can start to inhabit ourselves with presence. Little things become enough. Yes, there are still challenges but we move through them mindfully and without so much fear that things will not work out, because we are never presented with any situation that we can not handle. Of course, our ego says, "Watch out! Be ever alert!" because if we stay in an animalistic state of fear, then the ego stays in control, and we never evolve beyond mere survival.

However, what is so exciting and empowering at this time on the planet for so many people who are finding that the socialized ways of being simply don't work anymore is the idea that we don't have to buy anything to feel good. We don't have to be loved by anyone other than ourselves to feel good. We don't have to get attention, or sex, or praise to be okay. We can shift our way of perceiving reality from a constant state of desire to an appreciation for the simplicity of what is. And when we do this, good feelings begin to become the norm. This is quite a contrast from the way most people live in which "good feelings" are reserved for special occasions.

We've been missing out on so much contentment by constantly struggling for external gratification. It may take practice to shift our focus to peacefulness, but it is well worth the energy to do so. We may find ourselves falling out of peace until we truly "get it" once and for all, but when we slip, we can just witness the slipping, and continue to realize that we've grown tired of the things that just don't work.

And so, there is a birthday that awaits us all. We can allow ourselves to be born into a simple presence, and release ourselves from the addiction to "I'll feel good when I get..."

Peace,
Chris
